I lived in Water St off Crow Lane for 19 years. My wife Pat nee Mooney is from Greenwood Cresent in Orford, Warrington. We now live in South Carolina (Since 1976). Went to the Park school, Patterson Street and finished at Selwyn Jones. Served my apprenticeship with the NCB at Bold Colliery via Old Boston in Haydock. My Granddad. Hughie Hughes and Grandmother Dolly lived in Cole Ave, now almost gone. He was the Park Keeper at Mense Park when I was a kid and an active member of the British Legion. Many fond memories of my years in N-le-W, it was a great place to live. I really enjoy coming to this site. Great job. If anyone thinks they know me here my e-mail. davidwadams@hotmail.com

Found this site when researching my family history. My G G Grandfather, Robert Williams was a paper maker and resided in Newton-le-Willows in 1871. He originally came from Holywell in Wales. I am loooking to find any paper manufacturing mills in the area of Newton-le-Willows where he would have worked. His wife was Maria and they lived at 7 Nursery? Cottages, Newton-le-Willows at that time. I would love to hear from anyone who can give me a snippit of information. Regards, John Williams :-?

Hi, All who peruse this site,I have lived in Warrington now for twenty two years but I am an Earlestown Lad thru and thru and I have enough memories of "THE" town to write a big thick book. My name is Tom Lowe and I was born in Birch Street, went to the "baby school" at the top of the St.,then Manor School where my "Favourite" ahem Teacher the very formidable Fanny Collier was resident, then on to Patterson St.Over the early years I had many many great friends,Bryan Cook,Keith Chisnall,Dave Hayes,Mike Quinn,Terrence Rattington,Charlie "Chuck Chuck" Bowden,Norman Barret, Geoff Crook,Marion Parker,Christine McNeil,Peter Becket, and many many more.I was in St Johns Cubs, does anybody remember the St Pats dance in Common Rd or even earlier St Philips club? does anybody remember swimming in the Canal Locks in the altogether at the back of the Sugar works where the water was warm from the factory,Vics Club dance nights are always part of my many memories as are so many things about my upbringing in and amongst some of the great and down to earth people of this once very great TOWN,I'll be back with some more memories soon,See Ya all.

Hi Christine in the states. Trevor in the foggy boonies. When I read your mail it reminded me that the last time I was home was to bury my mother as well, same year 2003. It's a shame we only get to go for those things. Hopefully in the next year or two we can get over for a visit, visit. Keep up the good work Rod. Have got some of these Canadians at work on the site now, so you may hear from some loggers and fishermen. Trevor in the fog.

I Love talking about the old days in Earlestown and when I first looked at this site and I saw the name Christine McNeil it brought even fonder memories of Christine being my 1st girlfriend all those years ago,I think ,if I am not mistaken, she used to go to the American Base dance at Burtonwood where I think she met her husband and moved to the States :-(

Just Trevor the pain in the boonies. Nice to see Christine Mc. Neill sign the guest book. My daughter Suzanne gets married in Duncan B.C. on Saturday the 26th of November. Coincidently her husband to be is Steve Mc. Neill, so my little girl will be a Mc. Neill and we live in Port Mc. Neil. Keep up the great work on this web site, Trevor in the fairly wet boonies.null

Hi Just found this site, it's been a while since I visited any N-le-W site and I really enjoyed it. I was born there, at least in Earlestown. 38 Houghton St. Also I know some of the faces in your Boys Club pic. I grew up with those guys. Like you however I do not remember the names. My name way back then was Christine Mc. Neill went to St Mary's school. Last time I was home was to bury my Mum back in 2003. Still get very homesick and lived in the States 30+ years. Oh well Tons of luck with the site.. :-D :-D

Hi, I've been looking at this fascinating website for months now and thought I'd write to congratulate you on it. I don't come from the Earlestown/Newton Le Willows area myself but my husbands family do. I was very interested by the message left by Geoffrey Baskerville on the 12th September 05.He mentioned that he joined the Merchant Navy in 1947 the same time as my husbands father Norman, who had a sister called Marjorie. We were wondering if Geoffrey is the same person that Norman knew, if so we would like to hear from him. He mentioned an email address but there doesn't seen to be one.

My husband found the Burtonwood website by chance and what a great amount of reading. Newton holds a lot of wonderfull memories of visits to our Aunt & Uncle on Roscoe Ave. First trip was always to Earlstown Market, even if it was pouring with rain, happy days. Didn't realise there was so much information to be had. Thanks.

What a magnificent web site. I was born in Mercer Street then moved to Bridge Street, Earlestown behind the butchers shop. Attended St Peters and Newton Grammar schools. Left in 1947 to pursue a career in the Merchant Navy, eventually becoming Master in oil tankers. Came ashore in 1966 and worked on the River Medway until 1992, when I retired. Now living in Sydney Australia. There are many memories contained in your site and also some facts that I was not aware off about the old place. Keep up the good work. Anybody who knew me can catch me on my e-mail address. :-D

I agree with others what a good site this is. I have a personal interest because I am directly descended from the Brothertons of The Hey in Newton-le-Willows, at the Hall from at least 1350 to 1821, when my ancestor General Sir Thomas Brotherton (of the local 14/20 Hussars, museum at Preston; a swashbuckling hero of the Penisnsular War) sold off all his estates to pay for his sisters' marriages to Frenchmen ...The Hall itself wa scandalously destroyed in the 1970s on the bogus pretext that it was a "danger". It had been owned by the Legh family for many years I believe. It was a Grad 1 listed Georgian small manor and the local Council nodded through its destruction in a matter of days, as I only found out very recently as I have never been to Newton- Le-Willows. I intend to visit shortly to see the spots of interest including memorials in Winwick and Newton-in-Makerfield, etc. It might be of interest to know that another earlier Brotherton of note was Thomas Brotherton M.P for Newton 1694-1701. As a boy he conducted experiments on trees at The Hey. They were presented to the Royal Societty on behalf of "this worthy young gentleman" by none other than Robert Hooke (I have a transcript). This man TB was a devout Royalist and much of his wealth was temporarily lost. He seems to have held to a Catholic line while an MP. He was also a barrister and lived in London for some time. His daughter was married at Windsor Castle. It is a pity the House was bulldozed down. To me it was an outrage to find out that this had taken place. I look forward to researching Newton-Le-Willows fully when I visit. Thanks again for a very interetsing website.

Hello from Ontario Canada"
Great site! I have been researching my mother's family and found my great grandfather (Adolphus Savage - butcher, 55 Gerard Street) on your site. Both he and my grandmother (Emily Savage) lived in Ashton-in-Makerfield.Am trying to find his father's father. I know that his name was John O. Savage and that he was a police sargeant in Ashton-in-Makerfield but cannot find where he was born. I have never been to England but love looking at all the towns where my ancestors lived.
Again, great site.

One of the local residents, in the Newton le Willows area, has recently emailed this website to me, here in Texas USA. I loved reading the history of your beautiful area & the wonderful nostalgic photos, of the former years. I have never had the pleasure of visiting England, but I'm kept abreast of local news, through my very good heart transplant friend, Andrew W. over there across the BIG POND. Andrew & myself, are heart transplant recipients, and we love to share information about our different cultures, and the history of our 2 countries. Newton le Willows, is certainly a beautiful place, and please allow me to say to you all, HAVE A GREAT DAY & A GREAT LIFE.
